Good to know
Alchemist Coffee Company is one of the roasters behind Jaipur's specialty coffee scene. It was started by Mohit and Gaurav Choudhary as a micro-roastery in 2018, made its first wholesale sale in September 2019 to a café in Udaipur, and now runs cafés in Jaipur and neighbouring Ajmer. The Jaipur outpost on Kamla Marg in C-Scheme occupies a converted bungalow. The bungalow setting gives the café a homely feel quite different from a mall coffee chain.
All of Alchemist's beans come from India, from three partner farms in Karnataka. The roasters offer single-origin coffees processed by washed, honey and natural methods, and the farmers help to choose the roast profiles. At the café you can pick your beans for a pour-over or choose from espresso drinks. Signatures include the Coconut Water Long Black, espresso over chilled coconut water, an Espresso Sunshine, and a Vietnamese-style cold brew. A custom roast range called the Elements Series is also on offer.
The space is calm and warmly lit, with green walls, framed art, bookshelves and plants. Food runs to breakfast staples such as scrambled eggs and French toast, along with baked goods. Mohit Choudhary has said that Jaipur customers often ask about origins and tasting notes, and the café is a good place to ask questions and learn more about the farms and processing methods behind Indian specialty coffee.
Alchemist is more than a coffee stop. The café pairs coffee with comedy nights, art and live music, so check its social media for the current programme if you would like to combine a visit with an event. During the day it suits remote workers, coffee enthusiasts and anyone wanting a quiet table away from the old city crowds. Prices are moderate.
Kamla Marg is in C-Scheme, a short ride from MI Road and the Albert Hall Museum. Coffee fans can make a morning of it by visiting more than one of the city's roasters: Curious Life Coffee Roasters is also in C-Scheme, and Tapri Central on Prithviraj Road is the place to compare a cup of coffee with Jaipur's favourite chai. Buying a bag of single-origin beans to take home is a simple, lightweight souvenir.
