Café
Tapri Central
Jaipur's best-known modern chai house, overlooking Central Park on Prithviraj Road, with a long tea list, vegetarian snacks and a small design store upstairs.
Relaxed café beside the Anokhi store on Prithviraj Road, using produce from the Anokhi farm for salads, pizzettas, organic breads and fresh pomegranate juice.
Good to know
Anokhi Café sits beside the Anokhi shop in KK Square on Prithviraj Road, and for many visitors it is the obvious place to sit down after browsing the block-printed clothes and homewares next door. It was set up by John and Faith Singh, the founders of the Anokhi fashion and homeware brand, and it carries the same relaxed, crafted style as the shop. Fodor's describes it as a relaxed café with plenty of vegetarian choices.
The kitchen is supplied with fresh produce from the Anokhi farm, and the menu is seasonal and largely organic. It is eclectic rather than Indian, ranging from Mediterranean dishes to Thai curry. Past menus have included spinach and ricotta ravioli, a pizzetta with caramelised onion, walnut and rosemary, salads such as fennel, cucumber and feta, and a Massaman curry with organic rice. Fodor's highlights snacks, pizza, pasta and salads.
Bread is one of the café's strengths. It is known for organic wholewheat loaves, focaccia, baguettes and bagels, and loaves can be bought to take away. Cakes such as a mascarpone cheesecake and a coffee and walnut cake suit an afternoon break, and the fresh pomegranate juice has a following of its own.
The atmosphere is calm, with simple cane stools and a mixed crowd that has long included Jaipur's expatriate residents along with local families and travellers. It is a good choice for anyone who wants a lighter meal after several days of rich curries, for vegetarians and for those looking for a quiet place to read or plan the next day. Prices are moderate. It works equally well for a late breakfast, lunch or an afternoon break.
The café is in C-Scheme, a short ride from MI Road, and the Anokhi shop next door is worth a look for printed textiles and clothing. If the craft behind the fabrics interests you, the Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing in Amer, set in a restored haveli near Amber Fort, explains the history and technique of block printing, and makes a natural follow-up to a meal here. Tapri Central and Central Park are also nearby on Prithviraj Road.
