Why we recommend it

The Al Thakira mangroves are one of the most rewarding nature trips from Doha. The forest lies on Qatar's north-east coast, about 17 kilometres north-east of the town of Al Khor and roughly 40 minutes' drive from the capital. It is a protected natural reserve, established in 2006, and its mangroves stay green in both summer and winter, which makes a striking contrast with the desert around it.

The best way to experience the mangroves is from the water. Many companies run guided tours by kayak or stand-up paddleboard through the shallow channels, and guides explain how the mangroves absorb carbon dioxide, provide breeding grounds for fish and protect the shoreline from erosion. Some operators also run overnight camping trips. Tours generally cater for beginners, but ask the operator about age limits and fitness before you book.

Wildlife is the other draw. Herons and flamingos are common, with flamingos often resting and feeding in the shallow salty water, and you may also spot crabs, fish, gulls, cormorants, waders and, in season, ducks such as mallards and teal. Early morning is the best time for birdwatching, and sunrise and sunset are the best times for photographs. On land, the nearby Al Thakhira Beach is used for swimming, sunbathing, picnics and fishing, and at low tide the mangrove roots are exposed along the shore.

Bring binoculars, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water, because there is little shade on the open water. Stay on the wooden walkways and do not walk into the forest itself, as this damages the mangroves. In the hottest months, choose the earliest tour of the day.

You can drive from Doha, although Visit Qatar notes an off-road vehicle is advisable for reaching the area. For most visitors, joining a guided kayak tour is the simplest option, since equipment is provided and some operators arrange transport. Allow half a day including travel, and consider combining the trip with a stop in Al Khor town on the way back to Doha. Facilities at the forest itself are limited in published information, so pack snacks and plan for toilets before you leave the town, and check the weather and wind forecast, since strong winds make paddling harder.
