Why we recommend it

Wynwood Walls is the outdoor street art museum at the centre of Wynwood, one of Miami's best-known neighbourhoods for murals, galleries and cafés. Since 2009 it has brought in street artists from many countries to paint large murals on the walls of a cluster of buildings on NW 2nd Avenue, and the works are changed and added to over time, so a return visit is rarely the same as the first.

Inside the walls you move between courtyards and open-air spaces, each with large, colourful pieces, and the curation is handled by Goldman Global Arts. The variety is the point: some works are abstract, some are portraits, and some respond to the city or to current events. The official app offers self-guided tours, artist stories and an interactive map, and guided tours can also be booked on the website for more background on the artists and the history of the neighbourhood.

Wynwood Walls opens daily from 10.30am to 6.30pm, and the doors close 30 minutes before closing time. Tickets and admission details are on the website, and there is a free-for-locals programme. Arrive early in the day for softer light, fewer people in your photos and cooler temperatures. The area is especially busy on weekends and during the monthly Art Walk on second Saturdays, when it is worth arriving early or using a garage.

The site suits almost everyone: photographers, couples, families and anyone curious about street art. It is certified as an autism centre through IBCCES and has audio information, induction loops and wheelchair-accessible spaces. Allow an hour or so inside, and leave more time to walk the surrounding streets, where many more murals cover shopfronts and side walls.

The Wynwood Garage at 311 NW 26th Street is covered and open around the clock, and metered street parking is available nearby. The City of Miami Trolley runs from Monday to Saturday and stops on NW 2nd Avenue, and ride-share drop-off is at the main entrance. After your visit, Zak the Baker on NW 26th Street and Panther Coffee on NW 2nd Avenue are both within a few blocks for coffee and something to eat.
