Bar
1. Szimpla Kert
Budapest's original ruin bar, in a rescued former stove factory on Kazinczy utca, with a maze of rooms, a courtyard, live music and a farmers' market.
View details — Szimpla KertBudapest's nightlife is centred on District VII, the old Jewish Quarter, where ruin bars opened in abandoned buildings from the early 2000s. Szimpla Kert, the original, is worth seeing even if you only stay for one drink, and visiting by day lets you look at the decoration in peace. Instant-Fogas nearby combines several clubs and bars and stays open until 06:00, making it the place to dance late.
For something calmer, Doblo on Dob utca is a good introduction to Hungarian wine, and Opus Jazz Club at the Budapest Music Center presents serious jazz from Wednesday to Saturday. Rooftop bars are popular from spring to autumn: 360 Bar on Andrássy út offers heated igloos in winter, and High Note SkyBar at the Aria Hotel looks out over the dome of St Stephen's Basilica. Book rooftop tables for sunset, carry some cash, and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded bars. Night trams and buses, including trams 4 and 6 on the Grand Boulevard, make it easy to get back to your hotel.
