Why we recommend it

Sir Toby's Hostel is a well-established hostel on Dělnická Street in Holešovice, the former industrial district north of the centre that has become one of Prague's creative neighbourhoods. It has been a fixture on the backpacker scene for many years, and it offers a friendly, sociable base at budget prices away from the crowds of the Old Town. The same company also runs Sir Toby's Midtown in Žižkov.

Accommodation comes in three main forms: dormitories, pod beds and private rooms. Dorms are the cheapest option, pod beds offer more privacy within a shared room, and the private rooms suit couples or friends who want their own space but still enjoy the social atmosphere of a hostel. The hostel's pub is the centre of its social life, a lively bar where guests meet in the evenings, and breakfast is available.

The neighbourhood is one of the main reasons to stay here. Holešovice is home to DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, the National Gallery's modern art collection in the Trade Fair Palace, the Holešovice market hall and plenty of independent cafés, bars and restaurants. Letná Park, with its beer garden and views over the river, is within walking distance, as is the large Stromovka park, and the zoo in Troja is a short bus ride away. Nightlife options such as Cross Club are also close.

Sir Toby's suits solo travellers, students, groups of friends and budget-conscious couples who like a lively atmosphere and do not mind being a short ride from the historic centre. It is less suited to travellers who want quiet evenings or a hotel-style service. As with any hostel, bring a padlock for lockers and check the house rules when you book.

Trams run along Dělnická and nearby streets to the centre, and Nádraží Holešovice metro station on line C, which also has trams and buses towards the zoo, is within walking distance. From the hostel, a tram ride to the Old Town takes around 15 minutes. Check the hostel's website for directions and current room types before you travel. Private rooms are the first to sell out, so book early for summer and for weekends around big events in the city.
