Why we recommend it

Pedal Power has been renting bikes and running guided cycling tours in Vienna since 1996, which makes it one of the longest-established bike tour companies in the city. Vienna's official tourism board lists it among the city's guided bike tour operators, with a base on Bösendorferstraße close to Karlsplatz and the Musikverein.

The Classic Vienna Bike Tour takes about three hours and rides past the city's major buildings, including many of the grand monuments of the Ringstrasse. It is a good introduction for first-time visitors who want to see a lot in one morning. The Green Bike Tour, lasting three to four hours, heads from the centre through the Prater to the Danube Island and passes examples of modern architecture on the way, showing a side of Vienna that many visitors miss.

For something different, the Wine Tasting E-Bike Tour takes about four hours, following the Danube Canal out to Klosterneuburg Abbey, where the tour includes a visit to the abbey and a wine tasting. The e-bikes make the distance easy for most riders. For a full day, the Wachau Winery Bike Tour runs for about 11 hours through the vineyards of the Wachau valley. Bikes can also be rented for independent exploring if you prefer to set your own route.

The tours suit active travellers, couples and groups of friends, and the e-bike options open up longer routes to riders who are less fit. Children who can ride confidently should be fine on the city tours, but check with the company about age limits and child seats or trailers. Bring a light jacket and sunscreen in summer, and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Booking ahead is wise in July and August, when demand is highest and the most popular departures fill up first.

According to Vienna's tourism board, Pedal Power operates from March to October, daily from 09:00 to 18:00, so it is not an option in the winter months. Bösendorferstraße is a short walk from Karlsplatz station (U1, U2, U4) and the State Opera. Check the company's website for current tour times and meeting points before you go, as these can change with the season.
