Good to know
Good Vienna Tours is one of the main providers of free walking tours in Vienna. Its signature tour is a walk of around two and a half hours through the historic centre, taking in St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg, the old Jewish Quarter and many smaller squares and lanes along the way. The tour is free to join, and guests pay what they think it was worth in tips at the end, which makes it a good option for budget travellers.
The free tour runs every day in English at 10:00 and 14:00 and in German from 10:00, with Spanish tours on some dates. All tours start at Albertinaplatz 1, next to the Albrechtsbrunnen fountain at street level below the Albertina, where the guide waits with a green umbrella. Groups are capped at 35 guests, with a maximum of five people per booking, and a tour needs at least ten participants to go ahead. On 24 and 31 December only morning tours run, and there are no tours on 1 January. Entry fees to any sights are not included.
The company also offers paid tours with entry to the big palaces, including guided visits to the Belvedere, Schönbrunn Palace and the Hofburg with the Sisi story, as well as private tours for families and groups who prefer their own guide. These are useful if you want an expert to explain the rooms and their history rather than relying on an audio guide.
Walking tours suit first-time visitors who want to get their bearings on day one, solo travellers who enjoy meeting others and anyone who likes stories and context with their sightseeing. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water in summer and dress for the weather, as the tours run in rain and cold. Booking a spot online in advance is the best way to make sure of a place, especially in summer and around Christmas.
The office is at Himmelpfortgasse 11 in the old town and is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00. The Albertinaplatz meeting point is a minute from the State Opera and close to Karlsplatz station (U1, U2, U4). After the tour you are well placed to visit the Albertina, have cake at Café Sacher or explore the Hofburg.
Yes, the free tour is paid for by tips, so you give what you think it was worth.
