Bar
Loos American Bar
A tiny cocktail bar designed by Adolf Loos in 1908, with mahogany, onyx, marble and mirrored walls that make the room seem far larger than it…
A bar and restaurant on the 18th floor of the SO/ Vienna tower by the Danube Canal, with sweeping views of the old town and a Pipilotti Rist ceiling.
Good to know
Das Loft sits on the 18th floor of the glass Design Tower at the start of Praterstraße, home of the SO/ Vienna hotel, and it offers one of the best views in the city. The tower stands on the Leopoldstadt side of the Danube Canal, directly across from the old town, so from the bar you look straight over the rooftops to St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg and the hills of the Vienna Woods beyond.
The building was designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, and Das Loft's dining room is crowned by a large illuminated ceiling artwork by the Swiss video artist Pipilotti Rist, which glows in changing colours after dark. Combined with the floor-to-ceiling windows, it gives the space a dramatic, modern feel that contrasts with the historic city outside.
The bar is the place to come for a drink at sunset or later in the evening, when the city lights come on. Cocktails, wine and champagne are the focus, and the bar works on a walk-in basis: there are no reservations, so seats are allocated on a first come, first seated basis. If you want to eat, the restaurant serves breakfast, dinner and a Sunday brunch, and booking is recommended for all three through the restaurant's online system. You can leave a note when booking if you would like a window table, though specific tables cannot be guaranteed.
Das Loft suits couples, special occasions and anyone who wants a memorable view of Vienna. The dress code is elegant smart casual. Prices are high, as you would expect for a hotel bar with this outlook, but one drink at sunset is well worth it. The bar opens daily from 16:00 and stays open until 01:00 from Sunday to Thursday and until 02:00 on Friday and Saturday. Arrive early on weekends and summer evenings to have the best chance of a seat by the windows.
The tower is at Praterstraße 1, right next to Schwedenplatz station (U1, U4) across the Schwedenbrücke, and trams run along the canal. Take the lift to the 18th floor. Afterwards, the bars of the old town and the restaurants of Praterstraße and the Karmeliterviertel are a short walk away.
