Hotel
The Taj Mahal Palace
Mumbai's grand heritage hotel opposite the Gateway of India, welcoming guests since 1903, with 285 rooms and suites, a pool, spa and celebrated restaurants.
A modest, good-value hotel on Marine Drive with 38 large rooms, some with sea views, close to Churchgate and the promenade.
Good to know
Sea Green Hotel is a modest hotel at 145 Marine Drive, on the city's famous seafront promenade. Its appeal is simple: it offers a Marine Drive address and, in some rooms, views over the Arabian Sea at a fraction of the price of the luxury hotels at Nariman Point. Fodor's describes it as good value in a good location.
There are 38 rooms, which are larger than average for central Mumbai and kept clean. Some rooms face the sea, and these are the ones to request if you can, as watching the sunset or the lights of the Queen's Necklace from your window is a large part of staying here. Breakfast is included in many rates, although it is a basic affair rather than a highlight.
This is not a hotel for those who want facilities. There is no pool, gym or business centre, and the decor is dated and showing its age. What you get is space, a useful location and a fair price. Parking may be available, which can be useful if you are travelling with a driver, but confirm when you book.
Sea Green suits budget-conscious couples, families who need more space than a small boutique room allows, and travellers who intend to spend most of their time out and about. It is less suitable for anyone expecting modern design or extensive services. Book directly or check the room type carefully, as views vary between rooms. As with any hotel on a main road, rooms at the front may hear traffic, so bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
The location is the main reason to stay. Marine Drive's promenade is directly outside, so morning and evening walks along the sea wall to Nariman Point or Girgaum Chowpatty are easy. The Fort, the Kala Ghoda art district and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya can be reached by a short taxi ride, and Kyani and Co. in Marine Lines is a good choice for an Irani cafe breakfast. For an evening drink with a view, Eau Bar at The Oberoi is at the southern end of the same seafront.
