1. Lion’s Head Hike
The path up 669-metre Lion's Head spirals around the peak to a summit with views over Table Mountain, the City Bowl and the Atlantic coast.
View details — Lion’s Head HikeMany of the best experiences in Cape Town are outdoors and free. Hiking Lion's Head at sunrise or before sunset gives some of the finest views in the city, while Signal Hill offers almost the same panorama with a road to the top, making it ideal for a relaxed evening with a picnic. Wind is the main factor to plan around: avoid exposed hikes on very windy days and keep a flexible list of indoor options.
Closer to the centre, a walk through the Bo-Kaap introduces the city's Cape Malay heritage, its mosques and its colourful streets, and the Bo-Kaap Museum on Wale Street is the natural starting point. For beach time, Camps Bay on the Atlantic Seaboard has the classic view of white sand below the Twelve Apostles, though the water is cold, while Muizenberg on False Bay has gentler, warmer waves and surf schools for beginners. Both are busiest at weekends and in the December holidays, so go early in the day.
