Why we recommend it

MUJI Hotel Beijing brings the brand's simple, functional design to a historic corner of central Beijing. The hotel is in Langfang Toutiao, off Meishi Road in Xicheng, in the commercial area near Qianmen that Beijing's tourism site calls Beijing Fun. According to the hotel, it is about 450 metres from Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven are a short walk or bicycle ride away. Reservations first opened in June 2018, and the tourism site describes it as the second MUJI hotel in the world.

The building has four floors and around 4,000 square metres, with grey brick walls, black-tiled roofs, vermilion door frames and Chinese-style gates and courtyards. Inside, the design keeps the feel of traditional Chinese architecture and uses bamboo and recycled bricks taken from a nearby redevelopment area. The tourism site gives a total of 42 rooms, across nine room types, with indirect lighting and a choice of mattress firmness.

Shared facilities are thoughtful. MUJI Diner on the fourth floor serves dishes inspired by home cooking from around the world, with breakfast in the morning and a rooftop terrace looking towards Tiananmen; the tourism site notes a pitched glass roof on this floor. Café and Meal MUJI on the ground floor serves simple cooking, and the Book Lounge, open 24 hours, holds books on travel, culture, history and photography, including titles on Beijing. There is a MUJI store in the basement with travel items, and a free self-service laundry on the second floor.

The hotel suits solo travellers, couples and design lovers who want a calm, practical base in the old city at mid-range prices. The free laundry and central location are useful on longer trips.

Book directly through the hotel's website, and ask about room types when you reserve, as there are several layouts to choose from.

The surroundings are a big part of the appeal. Dashilar and Yangmeizhu Street, where Beijing Postcards runs its history walks, are close by, and Qianmen Street, with Quanjude's original roast duck restaurant and the shaomai house Duyichu, is within walking distance. Blue Note Beijing's jazz club is on East Qianmen Street for evenings, and Lao She Teahouse is on Qianmen West Street.
