Hotel
Mandarin Oriental Qianmen
A luxury hotel spread across 42 traditional courtyard houses in the Qianmen hutongs, with Cantonese and Italian dining, a hutong cocktail bar and a spa.
A five-star, all-suite hotel on Goldfish Lane off Wangfujing, home to the Michelin-starred French restaurant Jing and the courtyard-style Cantonese restaurant Huang Ting.
Good to know
The Peninsula Beijing stands on Goldfish Lane, just off Wangfujing, in the heart of Dongcheng. It opened in May 1989 as the Palace Hotel and is owned by the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels group. Between 2016 and 2017 it underwent a renovation reported at around US$123 million, which turned it into an all-suite hotel and cut the number of rooms from 525 to 230 across its 14 floors. The hotel describes its suites as the most spacious all-suite accommodation in central Beijing, combining Chinese artistry and craftsmanship with modern technology.
Dining is a strong point. Jing, the hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant, serves contemporary French cooking with subtle Asian influences, along with an extensive wine list and rare Champagne vintages, in a room designed to feel like a secret garden. Huang Ting, the Cantonese restaurant, recreates the courtyards of Beijing's old noble houses, with grey brick walls, slate floors, aged pine, ivory and blue silk and antiques, most of them from the Qing dynasty. The hotel also serves afternoon tea and seasonal cocktails, and has a spa and fitness centre.
The location is one of the most convenient in the city for sightseeing. Wangfujing, one of Beijing's main shopping streets, is on the doorstep, and the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square are within walking distance; the Novotel Beijing Peace, a few streets away, puts the Forbidden City about 1.5 kilometres or 15 minutes on foot from the area. Donglaishun's main hotpot branch is in the APM mall on Wangfujing Street.
The all-suite layout makes the hotel a good choice for families who want extra space and for longer stays, as well as for couples on a special trip. Business travellers benefit from the central position.
The hotel is officially rated five stars. Book directly through the Peninsula website for the latest packages, and reserve Jing and Huang Ting in advance if you plan to dine there, especially at weekends.
From the hotel it is easy to explore the hutongs and courtyard restaurants of Dongcheng, the National Museum of China on the east side of Tiananmen Square and, a little further, the Lama Temple and the Confucius Temple to the north. Taxis and the metro make the rest of the city straightforward to reach.
