Bar
Barc
A speakeasy-style cocktail bar in Tripureshwor and the first Nepali bar on Asia's 50 Best Bars list, known for drinks built on local fruit, spices and…
Thamel's dedicated rock bar since 2011, hosting Nepali and international bands on a large stage several nights a week.
Good to know
Purple Haze Rock Bar has been the home of rock music in Thamel since it opened at the end of 2011. Its founders, Swapnil Sharma and Ashok Sen, told the Kathmandu Post that they wanted to open a bar that focused solely on rock. More than a decade later, the bar remains a fixture of the district's nightlife.
The live music is the reason to come. The bar limits itself to a set number of band slots each week, around 14 when the Post reported on it in 2020, and it was the first venue in Thamel to put two bands on stage on the same night. New bands must already have played elsewhere in Thamel before they get a slot, which keeps the standard high. The venue supplies the equipment and a large stage, so bands only need to bring their guitars.
Purple Haze has been an important stage for Nepali rock. Bands such as Jindabaad and The Shadows have played here, and the bar runs Purple Haze Underground, a monthly event where up-and-coming bands launch their albums, set the ticket prices, while the venue charges only a nominal fee. International musicians have also played: Chris Adler, the former Lamb of God drummer, has performed here twice, once with the guitarist Michael Angelo Batio. In December 2024 Nepal Traveller still listed it as one of Thamel's main live music venues, hosting both local and international bands.
It suits groups of friends, solo travellers and anyone who wants to hear what Nepal's rock scene sounds like, and the Underground nights are a good way to catch new Nepali bands at an early stage of their careers. Because bands set their own ticket prices for album launches, entry costs vary from night to night, and the regular band nights give a broad picture of the scene, from established groups to newcomers.
The bar is in the heart of Thamel, the centre of Kathmandu's nightlife, where pubs, clubs, cafes and live music venues share the same narrow lanes, so it is within walking distance of most guesthouses in the district. Reggae Bar is also in Thamel, which makes it easy to move between stages on a night out.
