Bar
Siete Negronis
A cocktail bar devoted to the Negroni, listed on The World's 50 Best Bars extended list three years running, now at Terrazas San Cristóbal in Bellavista.
Founded in 1943, Santiago's historic jazz club now plays at Casa Maroto in La Reina, with live shows several nights a week and double bills at weekends.
Good to know
The Club de Jazz de Santiago is a city institution, and its slogan sums it up: the best jazz in Santiago since 1943. It was founded that year by five young enthusiasts, José Luis Córdova, René Eyheralde, Mario Raurich, Enrique Rosenblatt and Jorge Luis Cáceres, who rented a building on the corner of Santo Domingo and Bandera in the centre.
The club has moved many times. It went to Calle Merced in 1951, when it was legally recognised as the Club de Jazz de Santiago, then to venues on Mc Iver, Lota and California in the 1970s, and in 1979 to the corner of José Pedro Alessandri and Irarrázaval. After the 2010 earthquake damaged that building, it moved between cultural centres until 2014, when it opened in its current home, Casa Maroto, on the corner of Avenida Ossa and Hannover beside the Mall Plaza Egaña in La Reina. It operates alongside the Italian restaurant La Fabbrica.
Over the decades the stage has hosted Louis Armstrong, Elvin Jones, Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D'Rivera, Herbie Hancock, Lew Tabackin and Billy Cobham, among others. Today's programme mixes standards ensembles, trios, an All Stars band and tributes such as a homage to Django Reinhardt, and blues and Dixieland nights also appear.
Reservations are required. You can book through La Fabbrica's website, by phone on +56 9 4705 4174 or +56 2 2830 6208, or by WhatsApp on +56 9 8361 0548. Shows usually start at 21:00, with some later sets, and on Fridays and Saturdays a double show lets you see two sets with one ticket. Programmes, times and prices can change without notice, so check the monthly listings on the website first.
The club is in the east of the city, away from the central bar districts, and parking is available at the Mall Plaza Egaña next door, which makes it easy to reach by car or taxi. Arrive early to settle in, and consider dinner at La Fabbrica before the music starts.
The Club de Jazz suits music lovers, couples and anyone who wants a relaxed night out with live music rather than a noisy bar. It is a chance to experience a genuine Santiago institution that has survived an earthquake, many moves and more than eight decades of changing tastes.
