Why we recommend it

Azul Histórico is the downtown branch of the Azul restaurants created by Ricardo Muñoz Zurita, a chef and researcher who has spent his career documenting Mexican regional cooking. Time magazine called him a prophet and preserver of Mexico's culinary tradition, and his restaurants are a good place to taste dishes from across the country without leaving the capital. The Histórico branch is set around a patio on Isabel la Católica in the historic centre, with trees and strings of lights overhead.

The menu reads like a tour of Mexico's states. Highlights named by the restaurant include mole negro, pescado tikin xic, salpicón de venado and pipián blanco, dishes that draw on different regional traditions. The kitchen also runs a calendar of food festivals devoted to a single region or ingredient. A Oaxaca festival runs in October and November 2026, and past festivals have covered chiles en nogada, Michoacán, Jalisco, Colima and mango. These change the menu for several weeks, so check what is on before you go. A festival is a good reason to return if you have already eaten here, since the festival dishes are added to the regular menu for a limited time.

Azul Histórico serves breakfast in the morning and then lunch and dinner from 13:00 to 23:00 every day. The breakfast days listed on the website vary, so confirm by phone or WhatsApp if you plan to come early. Reservations can be made online through each branch's booking page or by WhatsApp, and groups of ten or more should contact the restaurant in advance.

The courtyard setting makes it a good choice for a relaxed lunch during a day of sightseeing, for couples, and for groups who want to share several regional dishes. Book if you have a set time, especially during a festival. If you are coming for breakfast, note that the morning service ends at noon, and lunch starts at 13:00. Allow around an hour and a half.

There are two sister restaurants: Azulísimo, also in the historic centre on Venustiano Carranza, and Azul Condesa on Nuevo León in Condesa, which keeps similar hours. Between them, the three branches cover breakfast, lunch and dinner in both the centre and Condesa.
