Good to know
The Bombay Canteen occupies a space in the Kamala Mills compound in Lower Parel, one of the former textile mill areas of central Mumbai that now house offices, restaurants and bars. It is one of the city's best-known modern Indian restaurants, built around regional Indian cooking and produce, and it also runs one of Mumbai's most highly regarded bar programmes. Its sister restaurant is O Pedro in the Bandra Kurla Complex.
The dining room is designed to recall an old Bombay bungalow, with marble mosaic tables and Art Deco touches, and the mood is casual and busy rather than formal. The menu changes, but certain dishes have become signatures, including Eggs Kejriwal, a dish with deep roots in Mumbai's old clubs. Recent menus have featured dishes such as pork birria tacos served in jowar bhakri with a Kolhapuri pandhara rassa for dipping, and chicken jhol momos. For first-timers, the eight-course Canteen Experience tasting menu, available in a vegetarian version too, is the simplest way to see what the kitchen does.
The bar deserves equal attention. Led by head of beverage innovations Prantik Haldar, it reworks global classics with Indian produce, regional spices, house infusions and home-grown spirits, and it was named in the Tatler Best 20 Bars India list in 2026. Drinks such as Hot Idea, Side Snack and Bakery Run show its playful side, and a mini gin martini with house-made chilli marmalade has been a favourite. Eating at the bar is a good option if you are on your own.
The Bombay Canteen suits couples, groups of friends and anyone who wants to see how Indian chefs are reinterpreting regional food. It is usually packed, so book ahead, especially for dinner and weekends. Allow two hours if you are taking the tasting menu. Prices are in the upper-middle range for Mumbai, and cocktails add up quickly.
Lower Parel is in central Mumbai, roughly midway between the southern peninsula and the suburbs, and taxis can drop you at the Kamala Mills entrance. The compound has plenty of other bars and restaurants, so it is easy to continue the evening nearby. Masque and Paradox are a short taxi ride away in the Shakti Mills area of Mahalaxmi.
