Bar
Living Room at W Muscat
W Muscat's lobby-level lounge and cocktail bar in Shatti Al Qurum, built around design, fashion and music, and open until 2am or later every night.
An elegant, over-21s cocktail and malt lounge at the Kempinski Hotel Muscat in Al Mouj, styled after a traditional European lounge and open nightly until 1am.
Good to know
1897 Cocktail Lounge is the main bar of the Kempinski Hotel Muscat, the large beachfront hotel in the Al Mouj Muscat waterfront community on the western side of the capital. The look is inspired by the classic lounges of Europe: pearl-toned leather seating, rich wood and stone finishes, and low lighting that suits a slow drink rather than a party. It is one of the more polished places in Muscat for a cocktail.
The drinks list focuses on classic malts and house-made cocktails, so ask for a recommendation if you are not sure where to start. Bar snacks are available throughout the evening, and on regular malt speciality evenings the hotel's chefs prepare small bites to pair with a tasting flight. These evenings are worth looking out for if you enjoy whisky, as they offer a structured way to compare several styles.
The lounge opens every day from 5pm to 1am. It is strictly for guests aged 21 and over, and a smart casual dress code applies, so avoid beachwear and sportswear. Alcohol in Oman is served in licensed venues, most of them in hotels, so carry photo identification in case you are asked to show your age. Prices are at the upper end of the city's range, in line with other luxury hotel bars. During Ramadan, hours and drinks service at hotel bars change significantly, so check with the hotel before planning a night out then.
It suits couples, business travellers and anyone wanting a quiet, grown-up drink before or after dinner. If you prefer something more casual, the hotel also has a sports bar and a poolside bar with views over the Gulf of Oman, so you can move on without leaving the building. For dinner, the hotel's restaurants cover Thai, North Indian, Mediterranean and international buffet cooking.
Al Mouj is about 15 to 20 minutes by car from Muscat International Airport, making the lounge an easy last stop for travellers staying nearby. From Qurum or Mutrah, allow 30 minutes or more by taxi, depending on traffic. The hotel sits on a long stretch of coastline, so a walk by the sea before your drink is easy to arrange.
