Why we recommend it

Oman Aquarium opened in April 2019 inside Mall of Muscat, in the western suburb of Al Mabelah, and was promoted at launch as the largest aquarium in the Middle East. The national tourism site describes it as covering more than 7,500 square metres, with over 100 exhibits and more than 10,000 marine creatures. The displays also tell the story of Oman's maritime heritage, including the voyages of the celebrated navigator Ahmed bin Majid, which gives it a local angle that sets it apart from a standard mall attraction.

The route leads through themed habitats, with Omani sea life such as local sharks, fish and octopus alongside animals from further afield, including penguins and crocodiles. The highlight for most visitors is the main tank, where a tunnel lets you walk through the water with fish passing overhead. Several add-on experiences are offered: a one-hour dive with an instructor for ages 12 and over, a one-hour snorkelling session for ages four and up, and a short animal feeding session of around 15 minutes with creatures such as penguins and turtles.

The national tourism site lists daily opening from 10am to 10pm, but check the official website for current times and ticket options, especially during Ramadan and public holidays. Allow around two hours for the main route, plus time for any session you book. Add-on experiences have limited places, so book them in advance.

This is one of the best options in Muscat for families with young children, and a good plan for a very hot afternoon or a rare rainy day, since everything is indoors and air-conditioned. The aquarium is listed as wheelchair accessible, and the flat, step-free mall setting makes it easy with pushchairs. Couples and older visitors interested in marine life will also enjoy the tunnel and the Omani species.

Mall of Muscat is on the western side of the capital, closer to Seeb than to the old town, so it combines well with a trip to the airport area or a stay in the Al Mouj district. A taxi or ride-hailing car is the easiest way to get there, and the mall has large car parks. Restaurants, cafés and shops in the mall make it simple to turn the visit into a half day.
