Why we recommend it

Ocean Park opened in 1977 on the south side of Hong Kong Island and has grown into one of the city's biggest family attractions. It is run by a not-for-profit statutory body and combines rides with animal exhibits and conservation education. The park covers more than 90 hectares and is divided by Brick Hill into two main zones, the Waterfront and the Summit.

The Waterfront is the gentler side. It holds the Giant Panda Adventure, home to the pandas Ying Ying and Le Le, whose twins born in August 2024 were the first giant pandas born in Hong Kong. You will also find animal habitats, the Grand Aquarium, and family rides such as the Sea Life Carousel and Toto the Loco. The Summit is where the bigger thrills are, with rides such as Hair Raiser, The Flash and The Rapids, plus Polar Adventure and Marine World.

Getting between the two zones is part of the fun. The cable car runs for about 1.5 kilometres, with views over the South China Sea, and takes around eight minutes. The underground Ocean Express funicular is quicker, at about four minutes. Water World, a separately ticketed all-season water park, opened in 2021 nearby at Tai Shue Wan.

Plan on a full day. Opening hours change with the season and special events, so check the official website before you go, and buy tickets only through the park's own website, ticket office or authorised sellers, as the park warns against counterfeit tickets. Weekdays outside school holidays are quieter, and seasonal events such as the Halloween festival draw large evening crowds. Bring sun protection and water in summer, as many queues are outdoors, and keep an eye on the weather, as rain and typhoon signals can affect outdoor rides.

The park suits families with children of all ages, and teenagers and adults who like roller coasters will find enough on the Summit to fill an afternoon. There are restaurants inside the park, including Neptune's Restaurant, Ginger Grill and Tuxedos Restaurant, as well as food stalls. The MTR South Island line made the park much easier to reach from Admiralty, and its arrival was credited with a jump in visitor numbers.
