Why we recommend it

The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is one of the largest public monuments in Taipei and a useful place to start thinking about the island's modern history. Construction began in October 1976 and the hall was completed on 5 April 1980 to a design by the architect Yang Cho-cheng. The hall stands 76 metres high within a broad formal park, and the whole complex has become as much a civic space as a memorial.

In front of the hall lies Liberty Square, a plaza that has hosted mass gatherings and pro-democracy demonstrations, including the Wild Lily student protests of 1990. It took its current name in 2007. The square is flanked by the National Theater and the National Concert Hall, two large buildings in traditional style that host performances throughout the year. The memorial hall contains a statue hall dedicated to Chiang Kai-shek. The way the site is presented has changed over time: since 15 July 2024 the military honour guard no longer stands watch in the statue hall, and its ceremonial patrols and drills now take place outdoors on Democracy Boulevard, in front of the hall's stairs.

The drills run hourly from 9:00 to 17:00, nine times a day, each lasting roughly 15 minutes, and they are cancelled when it rains. They are popular with families and photographers, so arrive a few minutes early to find a good spot. Beyond the main hall, the park is pleasant for an early walk before the heat of the day, and the long opening hours of the grounds mean you can come back in the evening too.

The memorial hall itself is open from 9:00 to 18:00 every day except Lunar New Year's Eve, Lunar New Year's Day, 228 Peace Memorial Day (28 February) and scheduled maintenance days. The surrounding park opens much longer, from 5:00 until midnight, which makes it a good place to see the buildings lit up at night. Allow an hour or two for the hall, the square and a walk through the grounds, more if you plan to attend a concert or play. The site involves a lot of open space and some steps, so bring water and sun protection in summer.

The official address is on Zhongshan South Road in the Zhongzheng District, close to the centre of the city and well connected by the Taipei MRT. A visit combines easily with the National Taiwan Museum, also in Zhongzheng, or with a walk to the Ximending shopping district for food afterwards.
