Attraction
Taipei 101 Observatory
The observation floors of Taipei 101, the 508-metre Xinyi tower, offer views across the Taipei Basin and a close look at its giant tuned mass damper.
Taipei's municipal art museum shows contemporary Taiwanese and international art in a striking building based on a traditional courtyard plan.
Good to know
The Taipei Fine Arts Museum, often shortened to TFAM, is the city's main public gallery for modern and contemporary art. It is the place to see what Taiwanese artists are making now, alongside international exhibitions, and the museum keeps a documentation archive of the Taipei Biennial. If you want a break from temples and historic sites, this is the most rewarding art stop in the city.
The building is worth the visit on its own. Seen from above it is shaped like a pound sign, a cluster of interlocking boxes that reinterprets the traditional siheyuan courtyard house with a modern edge, and at night the lit-up structure becomes a landmark on Zhongshan North Road.
Exhibitions change regularly. In autumn 2026 the programme included solo shows by Wang Yahui and Chen Zhao-Hua, the Taipei Art Awards 2026, and a ticketed exhibition on the composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, Seeing Sound, Hearing Time, as well as an online exhibition. Check the museum website before your visit to see what is on, as some shows are ticketed separately through OPENTIX. The Wang Da Hong House Theatre is closed for maintenance from 1 October to 15 December 2026.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 to 17:30, with a late opening on Saturdays until 20:30, and it is closed on Mondays. Admission is free on Saturdays after 17:00, which makes a Saturday evening visit a good-value choice. Allow one and a half to two hours to see the main exhibitions properly. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends, and if you choose the free Saturday evening slot, arrive soon after 17:00 so you have time to see the larger shows before the 20:30 close. The museum suits art lovers, design-minded travellers and anyone looking for an indoor plan on a hot or rainy afternoon; with large open galleries it is also manageable with older children.
TFAM sits on Zhongshan North Road in the Zhongshan District, in the north of the city. The Taipei Confucius Temple and the Dalongdong Baoan Temple are a short trip away, so the three are easy to combine in a single day that moves from traditional religious architecture to contemporary art.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 to 17:30, until 20:30 on Saturdays, and closed on Mondays.
