Why we recommend it

The lighthouse at Umhlanga Rocks is the best-known landmark of Durban's northern beach suburb and the natural starting point for a walk along its seafront promenade. Built in 1954, the round concrete tower stands 21 metres tall on the beach, painted white at the base and red at the top. It is unmanned but still active: its rotating light can be seen up to 24 nautical miles out to sea, and a second, fixed red light helps ships waiting outside Durban's harbour check their position, because if a vessel can see the red light it is too close to the shore. The tower is not open to climb, but it is one of the most photographed spots on this stretch of coast.

The paved promenade runs north and south of the lighthouse above the beach, and a self-guided walk along it takes 30 to 45 minutes. Along the way you pass the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve and Hawaan Forest at the northern end, rock pools including Granny's Pool, and the Whalebone Pier. Completed around 2007, the 80-metre pier was designed by the architect Andre Duvenage to carry a stormwater outlet pipe and a public walkway together, and its sixteen pairs of curved masts, made of glass-reinforced polyester, give it the look of a whale's skeleton. A cantilevered platform at the end gives views back along the coast, and the walkway is decorated with mosaics inspired by Zulu shields.

The promenade suits almost everyone: joggers and walkers in the early morning, families heading to the beach, couples watching the sunset, and visitors staying in Umhlanga's hotels who want a stroll before dinner. The Oyster Box hotel stands right beside the lighthouse, and its terrace is a popular place for a drink or afternoon tea with a view of the tower. It costs nothing to walk the promenade or visit the lighthouse from the outside.

Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, and wear sun protection. The beaches here are popular in the summer holidays and at weekends, so expect crowds then. Swim only at lifeguarded beaches and between the flags, and take care on the rocks at high tide.

Umhlanga Rocks lies north of central Durban and is easiest to reach by car or ride-hailing app; many visitors choose to stay here rather than on the city beachfront. The self-guided route starts by the Durban View parking area where Marine Drive meets Durban View Road, a few minutes' walk south of the lighthouse, and ends at a viewing deck opposite the Breakers Resort. Umhlanga village, with its shops and restaurants, is a short walk inland.
