Why we recommend it

Moses Mabhida Stadium was opened in November 2009 ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and its great white arch has since become the symbol of modern Durban. It stands in Stamford Hill, just inland from the northern end of the beachfront, and is named after the anti-apartheid leader Moses Mabhida. The stadium holds about 55,500 spectators in normal configuration and can be expanded for larger events.

The arch is the feature everyone notices. It runs about 350 metres from end to end, rises around 105 metres above the pitch and is made of hollow steel boxes weighing some 2,600 tonnes in total. It supports the roof and, on the outside, carries the stadium's adventure attractions. An Adventure Walk climbs some 550 steps up the southern side of the arch, while the Big Swing, opened in February 2010, lets riders step off a platform and swing in a 220-metre arc out over the pitch. A funicular SkyCar was built to carry visitors up the northern side to a viewing platform at the top, but it has not operated since 2018 and is part of a long-running refurbishment programme.

Today the stadium is a major events venue, hosting sport, motor shows such as Monster Jam and large public gatherings, and it has worked with the Comrades Marathon on the race's finish venue. Visitors who are not attending an event come mainly for the architecture, the adventure activities and the view from the arch over the city, the harbour and the Indian Ocean. Because the municipality is carrying out phased repairs and upgrades, with major construction planned through the 2026 and 2027 financial years, check which activities are running before you go, ideally by contacting the stadium through its website.

The Big Swing and Adventure Walk suit teenagers and adults with a head for heights; ask about any age, height or weight conditions when booking. Families and less adventurous visitors can enjoy the outside of the stadium and the surrounding open space, including People's Park. Allow an hour or two if you are doing an activity, and avoid windy days, when high-level attractions may be suspended.

The stadium is linked to the Golden Mile by a walking and cycling route, so you can combine a visit with a stroll or bike ride along the beachfront from North Beach. Ride-hailing cars and taxis can drop you near the main entrances on Walter Gilbert Road.
