Why we recommend it

Teeling Whiskey Distillery brought whiskey making back to the centre of Dublin. Describing itself as the first new distillery in the city in 125 years, it stands on Newmarket square in the Liberties. The Teeling name has roots going back to 1782, and the modern company has built its reputation on small batch, single malt, single grain and single pot still whiskeys, several of which you can taste on a visit.

Tours take you into the working distillery to learn how Irish whiskey is made, before finishing with a guided tasting. The range of tours is wide. The basic Teeling Tasting Tour lasts about 50 minutes and includes one whiskey and a cocktail, and the Trinity Tasting Tour, also about 50 minutes, compares three different whiskeys. The Distillery Select tour adds a fourth whiskey, including the peated Blackpitts single malt, and the Connoisseur Cask Collection is a small-group session of about an hour with rarer bottlings. There is also an Irish Coffee Academy of about 70 minutes, with a hands-on masterclass, which makes a good choice for a group with mixed tastes.

The visitor centre also includes the Bang Bang Bar and the Phoenix Café, so you can stay for a drink or a light bite after the tour, and Teeling gift vouchers can be spent in either. A non-alcoholic option for the basic tour is available on request at reception. Staff check ID before entry, and you must be of legal drinking age to take part in the tastings, so bring identification.

The distillery is open daily from 11:00, closing at 18:00 on weekdays and Sundays and at 19:00 on Saturdays. Booking a time slot online is the best way to avoid waiting, especially at weekends and in summer. Allow around an hour for most tours, plus time in the bar or café. Accessibility details are not set out on the tour page, so contact the distillery before booking if you need step-free access.

Newmarket is a short walk from St Patrick's Cathedral and about 15 minutes on foot from the Guinness Storehouse, so it fits well into a day exploring the Liberties.
