Why we recommend it

Muizenberg sits on the northern shore of False Bay, about half an hour south of the city centre, and its beach is the start of a sweep of sand that runs for more than 20 kilometres around the top of the bay. It is considered the main surfing spot in Cape Town, and the waves at Surfer's Corner, at the western end of the beach, are usually gentle and rolling, which makes them ideal for beginners.

Surfing is the main draw. Several surf schools along the beachfront rent boards and wetsuits and offer lessons for all ages, and on most days the water is dotted with learners. The water on the False Bay side is generally warmer than on the Atlantic coast around Camps Bay and Clifton, although a wetsuit is still a good idea for most of the year. The row of brightly painted beach huts is one of the best-known images of the area.

Muizenberg has a long history as a seaside resort. The Dutch East India Company built Het Posthuys here in 1673, one of the oldest buildings in South Africa, and after the railway arrived in 1882 the town became a fashionable holiday destination. Cecil Rhodes died in his cottage here in 1902, and the building is now a museum. A beachfront upgrade, which includes replacing the sea walls and beach huts, began in 2025 and is expected to finish by the end of 2026, so some areas may be affected by works.

False Bay is home to great white sharks, and a shark spotting service operates from Muizenberg to warn swimmers and surfers. Pay attention to the flags and sirens, and swim or surf in the areas watched by lifeguards. The beach can be windy in summer, especially in the afternoons, so mornings are often better for surfing.

Muizenberg station is on the Southern Line between Cape Town and Simon's Town, a short walk from the beach. The area suits families, beginner surfers and anyone wanting a more relaxed beach than the Atlantic Seaboard, and it combines well with a stop in nearby Kalk Bay or a trip on to Boulders Beach and Cape Point.
