Why we recommend it

Lion's Head is the pointed peak that rises to 669 metres between Table Mountain and Signal Hill, and the walk to its summit is one of the most popular hikes in Cape Town. It is part of Table Mountain National Park, and its shape, seen from the city, is said to resemble a crouching lion, with Signal Hill forming the body.

The route starts from Signal Hill Road, a short drive from Kloof Nek, and the path spirals around the mountain as it climbs. That is what makes it special: the view keeps changing as you go, from Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles on the Atlantic side to the City Bowl, the harbour and Robben Island, and finally to the face of Table Mountain itself. Allow about an hour to reach the top at a steady pace, and a little less to come down.

The lower part of the trail is a wide gravel path, but the upper section involves some scrambling over rock. There are short optional stretches with chains and metal staples for those happy to climb, and an alternative path for those who prefer to avoid them. Proper shoes with good grip make a real difference, and the rock can be slippery after rain.

Timing matters. Sunrise and the hour or two before sunset are the most popular times, and the summit can be crowded on clear summer evenings and on full-moon nights, when many people hike up to watch the moon rise over the city. If you go for sunset, carry a head torch for the descent. Avoid the hike in strong wind, when the exposed summit can be dangerous, and in the heat of the middle of the day in summer, as there is little shade.

Carry water, a warm layer and sun protection, and hike with others if you can, especially early or late in the day. There is no fee for the trail. Parking along Signal Hill Road fills up quickly at popular times, so many people take a taxi or ride-hailing service to the trailhead. The hike suits reasonably fit adults and older children who are comfortable on uneven ground.
