Why we recommend it

LuminAir is a sky bar and terrace on the 11th floor of the DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station, on the Oosterdokseiland just east of the station. It describes itself as a high-vibe, elevated sky bar, and its main attraction is the view: from up here you look out over the harbour, the IJ, the old centre and the roofs of the city, with the A'DAM Tower across the water. It is one of the most convenient places in central Amsterdam for a drink with a panorama.

The drinks list centres on expertly made cocktails, and there is also an oysters and Champagne offer for those celebrating. Music is a big part of the experience. LuminAir Sessions bring DJs to the bar every day, with Rooftop Beats on Fridays and Skyline Soul on Saturdays, so the mood shifts from relaxed early evening drinks to a livelier night as the hours go on.

The bar suits couples, groups of friends and visitors wanting a sophisticated drink with a view, and it is a good place to watch the sun set over the city before dinner. It is less suited to anyone after a quiet, traditional pub; the city's brown cafés are better for that.

Opening hours are from 5pm to midnight on Monday and Tuesday, 5pm to 1am on Wednesday, 5pm to 2am on Thursday, noon to 3am on Friday and Saturday, and noon to midnight on Sunday. The bar is occasionally closed for private events, and these dates are listed on its website, so check before you go. Reservations can be made by email or phone and are advisable for sunset and at weekends, when the terrace is in demand. Smart casual clothing suits the setting.

The hotel is a few minutes' walk east of Central Station, beside the central public library and the Sea Palace floating restaurant, so it is easy to combine with dinner nearby or with a visit to NEMO Science Museum. The public car park beneath the hotel is useful for drivers. The free ferries to Amsterdam-Noord leave from behind Central Station if you want to continue the evening across the water.
