Why we recommend it

Strung along the western shore of the Golden Horn, Balat and neighbouring Fener were long home to Jewish, Greek and Armenian communities, and their layered history shows in every street. Balat's Ahrida Synagogue dates back to the 15th century, while on the waterfront the Bulgarian St Stephen Church was built from prefabricated iron sections shipped down the Danube and reopened in 2018 after restoration.

Today the steep lanes of painted houses are filled with cafés, antique shops and small restaurants, and they are popular with photographers. Wear comfortable shoes for the hills, visit on a weekday morning to avoid crowds, and arrive by Golden Horn ferry or bus. The Kariye Mosque is a short uphill walk away.
