Lights. Camera. Glamour. This was the highlight of the Met Gala 2023 and those of previous years. The most prestigious fashion event in history had hundreds of celebrities cutting across various professional spheres attend. Many of these stars didn’t just show up but showed out.
The Metropolitan Museum of Arts in NYC has consistently covered Met Gala events without disappointing fashion lovers with the calibre of stars in fashion, sports, film, arts, or music and the fashion statements they make. From spectating or attending the event, the Met Gala is a showstopper.
The Met Gala 2022 was centred on the history of American fashion in continuation of the Met Gala 2021 celebration, with its theme, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” But, the Met Gala 2023 took a different turn with the monochromatic effect all over the Metropolitan Museum which was inspired and themed after Karl Lagerfeld, an iconic German fashionista and Chanel’s late creative director.
It was almost impossible to pick our 10 best dressed with so many styles and expressions of the black and white colours. But, in this article, our selection highlights 10 of whom we consider our best and why.
Met Gala 2023: Criteria For Selection
Just as Karl Lagerfeld stood out for his epic signature white hair, black sunglasses, fingerless gloves, and high-starched detachable collars, we looked out for celebrities who recreated his style in their own unique fashion, killing it.
We looked to see how well celebrities could think outside the box with two neutral colours known to be basic when combined without much thought to it.
For every Met Gala event, a celebrity is considered best dressed not just by meeting the criteria, but by outdoing themselves and we were so ready for the showdown. Check out our Met Gala 2023 top 10 best dressed from our tenth best to our number one.
Met Gala 2023: Top 10 Best Dressed Celebrities
1. Sydney Sweeney
The beautiful actress graced the red carpet, wearing a doll-like blush pink Miu Miu gown that perfectly complemented her skin tone. She adorned the gown with a black bow at the bottom and accessorized with jewels that added extra glam to her outfit.
Just like her first-ever Met Gala appearance in 2022, she had heads turn with her glamorous look. In 2022, she was seen wearing a strapless white corset Tory Burch gown that actually turned into a mini dress!
She finished the outfit wearing a matching bow on her voluminous blonde hair and blush-looking makeup.
2. Lily Collins
The star of ‘Emily in Paris’, Lily Collins couldn’t make it to the 2022 Met Gala due to the busyness of this very series, but promised to show up in the following event. She fulfilled her promise by doing just that.
In honour of Karl, Collins wore a stunning Vera Wang gown that featured a white bustier top with puffed sleeves and a black skirt with “Karl” boldly written on the train. She combined the look, with a bold red lip and gorgeous Cartier jewellery.
3. Allison Williams
Allison wore a coral Italian silk orange satin dress with a wide belt, column skirt, and half-tied bow that crawled up her left shoulder before falling behind on a train. She accessorized with black gloves, Mikimoto pearls, and a black headband that gave her appearance a totally vintage feel.
The actress’ outfit was inspired by one of Lagerfeld’s original sketches from a time at Patou as a creative director. We saw no reason why she shouldn’t be listed as one of our favourites.
4. Priyanka Chopra
The pretty Priyanka Chopra walked the red carpet aisle at the Met Gala 2023 with her significant other, Nick Jonas. As always, she turned up the heat at the Met Gala 2023 in a black strapless Valentino gown that showed off her beautiful legs on one side.
Her extravagant tufted cape completed the look, adding a playful touch to her modern and natty look. She joined the cape to a pair of white opera gloves, and her glossy black platform heels, a stunning blue crystal pendant, and a diamond-woven Bulgari chain necklace neatly accessorized the outfit.
Generally, it’s safe to say that she looks good in almost anything – Not just for how she combines them, but how she also exudes confidence and elegance.
5. Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway burst out with a body-hugging white tweed Versace gown; tweed depicting one of the fabrics Lagerfeld used repeatedly on his outfits. Her pretty piece included sultry cutouts on the torso with one revealing her tanned model-like thighs. Epic gold safety pins held these cutouts together, giving the dress a unique finishing touch.
Anne Hathaway finished with matching tweed opera gloves, white platforms, and a brilliant diamond choker designed by Bulgari.
6. Michaela Coel
The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star and co-chair for this year’s gala didn’t come to play as she walked the red carpet steps in a semi-sheer gown by Schiaparelli. The outfit was a long-sleeved, hugged flowing dark brown dress, embroidered with several crystals and star-shaped adornments along the chest and abs region.
She finished this honey-toned look with her hair plaited back in cornrows and nude and bold makeup that announces, “African princess.”
Her golden accessories didn’t go unnoticed as she spiced up her dazzling outfit with gold bogus earrings, rings, and a pair of shoes.
7. Naomi Campbell
This supermodel has always been one to admire at Met Galas with her elegant statement outfits back-to-back. Naomi wore a gown which fans qualified to give her a saree look. Her outfit consists of a luscious pink fabric draped over one shoulder, plus a shimmering silver sequin bodice and matching silver trim.
Naomi went for glowy make-up and straight hair with a pair of silver heels giving her a modern Egyptian princess vibe in her glory.
8. Camila Morrone
The 26-year-old actress showed off her toned curves in an elegant black and white Rodarte dress with a sheer bust giving it a classic elegant look. She accessorized with Fred Leighton jewellery and a Jennifer Behr bow.
9. Nicole Kidman
Karl Lagerfeld was well represented again as Nicole stepped on the red carpet wearing an archival Karl Lagerfeld-era Chanel Haute Couture gown from 2004. The dress she was seen wearing sure looked like what she wore in an iconic Chanel No. 5 commercial from the same year, directed by Baz Luhrmann.
Her striking gown made an impression. The outfit was made of pink silk tulle and embroidered with 250 pink ostrich feathers, and over 3,000 silver crystals and sequins. Reappearing in Karl’s ethereal dress proves two things: that Kidman was an exceptional designer and exceptionally-made designs will always stand the test of time.

Rihanna has always been unpredictable with not just her outfits but her presence at events. She has a thing for being one of the last to walk in. And her appearances are always ones worth the wait. The moment she showed up, she showed out and deserves to be awarded our best dressed.
Rihanna has always been a fan favourite as she didn’t disappoint again by first showing up with A$AP Rocky in an archival vintage fur coat from the Fendi 1997 collection design by the legendary Lagerfeld himself.
She accessorized with a Bulgari necklace featuring layers of diamonds and cultured pearls, a pair of Gianvito Rossi heels decorated with white ribbons around her ankles, and a pair of camellia earrings.
She finished with a classic beauty look consisting of white eyeshadow and a bold red lip.
Interestingly, she was spotted days before the red carpet scene in a banging outfit that was undeniably on-theme.
