Top Fashion Trends In The Last Decade
The 2010s were a huge decade, marking various achievements and milestones for people and bringing up trends in the fashion industry that we didn’t foresee. If anyone had told us what we would be wearing in the 2010s, especially towards the end of the decade, we would have called them crazy. And just so we’re clear, the 2010s refer to the years beginning from 2010 right up till 2019. We have put together a list of the top fashion trends in the last decade. Celebrities wore them, influencers swore by them and our Instagram feed sent us daily updates, lol.
Fashion Trends In The Last Decade
Athleisure
Crop tops and leggings aren’t something you’d wear outside of the gym, right? Well, no. we wore them like everyday clothes in the last decade, particularly in the middle. Biker shorts, sport bras, tracksuits and trainers became haute couture and paired with immaculate makeup and blow-dried hair, we turned the world upside down, lol. And did designers jump on the train! We saw Balenciaga spit out hoodies, Chloe gave us some damn good tracksuits too. And this trend also spurred some new designs and collaborations like Beyonce’s Ivy Park, Rihanna’s Puma x Fenty and Stella McCartney and Prada with Adidas. Question is, will athleisure make into the ‘20s or are we going to retire it back into the gym bag?
Mom Jeans
Arguably the best thing that has happened to jeans lovers, mom jeans beat up skinny jeans and threw them out of the closet. We loved skinny jeans and they could go anywhere, dressed up or dressed down. But, as the decade began to draw to a close, we traded stretchy and constricting for straighter, high waisted and easier to wear. No more jumping around to fit into a pair, right? Well, mom jeans look like they’re here to stay, but we think the skinny jeans may make an even bigger comeback in the ‘20s. fingers are crossed.
The Off-Shoulder Trend
It was everywhere! Blouses, dresses, bralette tops, pretty much everything. We sacrificed sanity for a beautiful pair of glowing shoulders, and they were worth it. Besides, the ladies of the royal family of England, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, really like this trend, so it is safe to say, that we will be seeing a lot of shoulders in the coming years.

Oversized Tee Shirt
Oversized tees became really popular along with oversized hoodies and sweats in 2015, thanks to celebs like Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish. And they were so affordable. T-shirt dresses became the in thing and we even saw some on various red carpets. They look like they are here to say, as more and more people are opting for comfortable and less restrictive clothing. And they’re a personal favourite.
Naked dresses
Outrageously scandalous, these dresses have been around for a while, but in the past decade, they caused an uproar, unlike anything we have ever seen. Every red carpet had at least one celeb showing up in a sheer dress, and the more the gemstones, the better. Some of the best looks were served by Rihanna at the CFDA awards in 2014 and Beyonce at the 2015 Met Gala. And it looks like we are going to see more of it in this decade.
Distressed (Ripped) Jeans
While parents found it difficult to understand why their kids would want to wear jeans that had tears or “rips” in them, celebs were touting them around! And we loved ripped jeans. They helped in expressing individuality and the bolder your rips, the bigger your personality! And they could be worn anywhere, absolutely anywhere, unless your boss was or is anti-fashion, lol.
Crop Tops
Midriffs were bared in the middle of the last decade and will continue to be bared as this fashion trend is showing no sign of going away soon. They came innocently as tops paired with high waisted skirts or trousers, but now, this ‘90s fashion resurgent is worn as bralette tops! Smelling salts please. However, they are a great pair of clothing and can make you look sexy without trying at all. Awesome, eh?

Jumpsuits
If you didn’t own at least a pair of jumpsuits or their cousins, the playsuits, you might as well have skipped the last decade altogether. These babies were everywhere, in every colour, style, print and fabric available and you didn’t have to worry about matching colours, nope, they did that themselves. Anyhow, jumpsuits are here and it looks like they’re staying.
Chunky sneakers
We love a good pair of Louboutins, but they are not so comfortable after a while. In the last couple of years, we saw a rise in the sneakers movement. All of a sudden, sneakers weren’t restricted to ball games and athletics anymore, we wore them everywhere, even high-end restaurants. They are really comfortable and come in a wide variety of designs, thanks to Nike, Fenty, Adidas and Puma.
Tiny Sunglasses
In the 2000s, the bigger the sunglasses, the better. This continued right up till a point in the 2010s, the glasses were becoming smaller and smaller. And nobody complained, it was everywhere and Instagram influencers and celebs alike jumped on it. Well, not every celeb. Anne Hathaway isn’t a fan. Some factions argue that the tiny sunglasses are a trend we are all going to regret in the coming years and others, simply do not care. However, no matter how it ends, these glasses have made their mark, especially the retro ones with neon coloured lens and shiny frames
Fanny Packs
We thought these bags were meant for traders in the market. Imagine our surprise when celebrities began to rock them! And the designs were endless. We wore them around the waist, slung across the shoulders and paired with shorts and Balenciaga socks and Adidas slides! One thing is for sure, fanny packs aren’t going back to the traders anytime soon.
Transparent Shoes
Kanye West designed these as part of the Yeezy brand and they caught on. Everyone had to have a pair of transparent shoes in their wardrobe. And they come in a variety of designs, the gem-encrusted ones are a favourite among party-goers. And they are now available as thigh boots.
