Good to know
Salkantay Trekking, as its name suggests, specialises in the Salkantay route to Machu Picchu, one of the main trekking alternatives to the Inca Trail offered from Cusco. The company is based in central Cusco at Calle Triunfo 392, a short walk from the Plaza de Armas on the same street as Paddy's Irish Pub, and describes itself as a team of travel specialists with 15 years of experience, more than 200 local collaborators and full-time staff.
The Salkantay range is wide. The Classic Salkantay is a five-day trek, there are shorter four-day and three-day challenge versions, and premium and private five-day departures for those who want more comfort. The Salkantay Mountain Domes Trek uses dome accommodation in the mountains, and some itineraries stop at a Sky Camp. There is even a five-day honeymoon version. For longer adventures, combined routes link Salkantay with the Short Inca Trail or the Classic Inca Trail, and with Rainbow Mountain, while the nine-day Andean Explorer strings several regions together.
Beyond its namesake trek, the company runs the Inca Trail in one-day, two-day, classic four-day and private versions, and tours to Machu Picchu by train. Other routes include Rainbow Mountain, Ausangate, Choquequirao, Huchuy Qosqo, Lares, the Inca Jungle trip, the Inca Quarry trek and Ancascocha, plus a range of day trips from Cusco.
The company highlights certified and experienced guides, and client reviews mention the chefs and horsemen who support the treks. It displays a Peru's Leading Tour Operator award for 2025, a Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice badge for 2026 and a Safe Travels badge, and reports a five-star Tripadvisor rating across more than 12,000 reviews. By its own count it has planned more than 6,000 adventures and served more than 70,000 clients.
Salkantay Trekking suits hikers who want a different route to Machu Picchu, or who want to combine the Salkantay landscapes with the Inca Trail itself. Spend a few days acclimatising in Cusco before you start any high-altitude trek. The office is open daily from 09:00 to 19:00 Peru time, and you can book by phone, WhatsApp, a toll-free number from the United States and Canada, or email.
