El Barón

El Barón is a cocktail bar and café on the Plaza San Pedro Claver in the walled city, the square in front of the church where Saint Peter Claver is buried. It describes itself simply as a classic cocktail bar, but its reputation reaches well beyond Cartagena: it was No. 66 in The World's 50 Best Bars 51-100 list in 2022, and in 2025 it was one of four Cartagena places selected by the 50 Best Discovery guide, alongside Alquímico, Celele and Casa San Agustín.

The drinks list is divided into two menus, Cócteles de Autor for the bar's own creations and Cócteles Clásicos for the standards. El Universal describes creative cocktails that mix tradition and modernity, using local ingredients and artisanal spirits, from classics to more experimental drinks. Suitcase magazine has written about a science-led approach, with careful attention to details such as ice and fresh mint, locally sourced herbs and occasionally spirits distilled in-house.

It is also a proper café-restaurant: El Barón serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, pairing its drinks with food made from high-quality ingredients. That makes it a versatile stop, from a late-morning coffee on a weekend to an aperitif at sunset or a nightcap after dinner.

Opening hours for dine-in service are 16:00 to midnight from Monday to Thursday, 12:00 to 01:00 on Friday and Saturday, and 12:00 to midnight on Sunday, so on weekdays it is an afternoon and evening venue, while from Friday to Sunday it opens at noon in time for brunch and lunch. It suits couples and small groups as well as anyone who wants good cocktails with food.
