Why we recommend it

Viceroy Bali is a family-run luxury resort in Petulu, a few minutes from the centre of Ubud, built around a collection of 40 private pool villas looking out over a jungle valley. It is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and has been recognised in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards and in the Michelin Guide's hotel selection, and in 2026 it gained certification from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

The villas range from Terrace Villas and Pool Suites up to the two-bedroom Vice Regal Villa and the Viceroy Villa, which has two bedrooms and a 15-metre pool. The Elephant Villa looks down to the river below. All have their own heated pools, so this is a resort designed for privacy, with views across the valley rather than a busy central pool scene. The Terrace Villas centre on a traditional balé overlooking the pool, while the Deluxe Terrace Villas, which the resort calls its most sought-after, add an infinity pool, a marble terrace and a freestanding bath. The Elephant Villa has a thatched roof and a carved stone elephant at its entrance, and the Viceroy Villa, with two master bedrooms under a double-tiered thatched roof, is pitched at families.

Dining is a strong point. Apéritif is the resort's award-winning fine-dining restaurant, serving a degustation menu, while CasCades, which the resort calls its beating heart, serves all-day dining with valley views. Pinstripe is a speakeasy-style cocktail bar inspired by the glamour of an earlier era. Akoya Spa has rooms for couples' massages, reflexology chairs and a beauty salon, and guests have mentioned a gym and squash courts among the other facilities.

Guests report a free shuttle into the centre of Ubud and golf-cart transfers around the hillside grounds, which is useful given the slopes. The resort's Bali Luxury Package includes a private concierge available around the clock. Reservations can be made through the resort's website or by email to its reservations team.

Viceroy suits honeymooners and couples above all, and anyone wanting a quiet, high-end base with a serious restaurant on site. It is close enough to Ubud to dip into town for sightseeing and markets, while remaining secluded. The resort was also listed in TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice awards for 2026.
