Paon Bali Cooking Class
A Balinese cooking class in a family compound in Laplapan village, combining a market visit, a walk through the rice fields and a hands-on lesson in…
The natural dye studio of Threads of Life, a fair-trade textile project working with weavers across Indonesia, offering half-day and multi-day dye classes near Ubud.
Good to know
Threads of Life is a textile organisation based in Ubud that works directly with more than 1,200 women in over 35 weaving groups on 12 Indonesian islands. It commissions heirloom-quality textiles and baskets coloured with natural dyes, and its aim is to help weavers revive endangered weaving and dyeing techniques that were in danger of disappearing. For visitors, it offers one of the most hands-on ways to learn about Indonesian textiles, through classes at its own Natural Dye Studio and Garden.
The studio is at Umajati Retreat on Jalan Subak Uma Petulu Lebah in Petulu, Ubud, and is open from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Half-day classes introduce techniques such as natural dye batik and indigo tie dye, while multi-day courses of two to five days give a fuller introduction to the studio's methods with a creative project to take home. Studio day use is available for people who already have some experience, and there is accommodation at the studio for those taking longer courses.
Threads of Life also runs a programme of shorter mini workshops and Feature Friday talks on textiles, with a 2026 series on its website, and it has hosted guest workshops by visiting artists in techniques such as barkcloth surface design. Class details and dates are listed on the studio's own website, which is linked from the main Threads of Life site, and enquiries can be made by WhatsApp or email to the team.
In Ubud itself, Threads of Life has a store on Jalan Kajeng, open daily from 10am to 6pm, and a gallery on Jalan Raya Lungsiakan with the same hours. Visiting the store or gallery before or after a class is worthwhile, as they show the textiles and baskets commissioned from the weaving groups the organisation works with.
A class at the studio suits creative travellers, textile lovers, families with older children and anyone who wants a slower, more practical experience than a sightseeing tour. It also gives a different perspective on Indonesian culture, focused on the women weavers whose techniques the organisation helps to keep alive. Check the website for class dates and book in advance.
