The Chefs’ Table
The Chefs' Table in Umhlanga serves seasonal, contemporary dishes built on KwaZulu-Natal produce from an open kitchen, with a serious wine cellar and regular pairing dinners.
Chef Johannes Richter's LivingRoom at Summerhill Guest Estate in Cowies Hill serves a seasonal, garden-led tasting menu and was named Eat Out Restaurant of the Year in 2022.
Good to know
The LivingRoom is the restaurant at Summerhill Guest Estate in Cowies Hill, near Pinetown and inland from central Durban, and it was the highest-rated Durban-area restaurant in the 2025 Eat Out star awards. Chef Johannes Richter runs the estate together with his wife, Johanna, and his mother, Christine, and the restaurant has built a national reputation from this family setting. It was named Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant of the Year in 2022 and received three stars, the top rating, in the 2025 Eat Out awards.
The kitchen serves a set multi-course tasting menu that changes with the seasons. Richter trained in French technique and also draws on Asian methods, and the restaurant describes its approach as garden to plate. Sustainability and seasonality guide the menu: the kitchen works with hyper-local and endemic ingredients, uses whole plants and animals where possible, and relies on fermentation and preservation to carry produce through the year. A wine flight focuses on smaller South African producers. Because the menu is set, it is worth telling the restaurant about allergies or dietary needs when you book.
This is a destination meal rather than a casual dinner, and it suits food lovers, couples celebrating a special occasion and anyone who wants to see how a South African chef interprets KwaZulu-Natal's produce. Allow three hours or more for the full menu, and expect fine-dining prices. Guests staying at the guest estate can also order from an a la carte bistro menu, which makes a stay here a good option if you want to combine the tasting menu with a quiet night away from the beachfront.
Dinner is served from Tuesday to Saturday, with seating from 18:30 and last orders at 19:30, and there is lunch on Saturdays from 12:30, with last orders at 13:30. The restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Tables are limited, so book well ahead through the online booking page, by phone or by email, particularly for Friday and Saturday.
Cowies Hill lies west of the city centre, so plan on a car or a ride-hailing app, especially if you are drinking the wine pairing. Hillcrest and the Valley of a Thousand Hills are further inland on the same side of the city, which makes Saturday lunch here a good finish to a day of exploring the inland suburbs.
