Restaurant
Lao Zheng Xing
A Shanghainese restaurant trading since 1862 and holding a Michelin star, known for yellow croaker in wine lees sauce and stir-fried river shrimp.
Chef Stefan Stiller's counter restaurant in Changning, the only three-Michelin-star restaurant in the 2026 Shanghai guide, serving a seasonal tasting menu.
Good to know
Taian Table is the only restaurant to hold three stars in the 2026 Michelin Guide Shanghai. The German chef Stefan Stiller opened it in April 2016. The restaurant describes itself as a small, intimate and food-driven dining room, and it sits in a garden office development off Zhenning Road in Changning, away from the busy central districts.
The format is built around the kitchen. Guests sit at a counter that wraps around an island where the chefs cook, so the meal doubles as a chance to watch the team at work. There is a single tasting menu of ten or twelve courses that changes every few weeks, and the menus are numbered in sequence, a reminder of how often the kitchen starts again. The cooking blends German traditions with Asian flavours, with ingredients such as kimchi and curry appearing alongside European techniques. The Michelin Guide notes an interesting wine list.
This is a special-occasion restaurant at the top of the price scale, and it suits food lovers, couples and solo diners, since the counter layout works well for a party of one. It is not a place for a quick dinner: allow a full evening for the menu. Book well ahead through the restaurant's online reservation system, which is linked from its website, and mention any allergies or dietary needs when you book, as the menu is fixed.
Because the menu changes so often, two visits a few months apart can feel quite different. The current menu and wine list are posted on the restaurant's website, which is the best place to check what is being served before you go. Credit cards are accepted, and there is a car park on site.
The World's 50 Best Discovery listing describes 10, 12 and 14-course options and a seasonal core menu that changes every six to eight weeks, with past dishes such as sea urchin on brown butter sourdough and baby squid with tomato consommé, and a choice of artisanal chocolates to finish. It lists dinner service from Tuesday to Saturday and an annual closure in early February, so check dates before you plan around it.
The restaurant is in Changning District, west of Jing'an. Taxi or ride-hailing is the simplest way to arrive, using the full address. If you are staying in Jing'an, the journey is short.
