Bar
Hemingway Bar
A small cocktail bar inspired by Ernest Hemingway, known for classic cocktails, a large absinthe collection served the traditional way and fine rums.
Prague's oldest jazz club, on Národní třída since 1958, with live jazz every night and a stage where Bill Clinton once played the saxophone.
Good to know
Reduta is the oldest jazz club in Prague and one of the oldest in central Europe. It opened on Národní třída in 1958, and through the communist decades it was a rare space for jazz and for a sense of freedom, with leading Czech musicians on its stage. It became world famous in January 1994, when President Václav Havel brought Bill Clinton here and the American president played the saxophone with the house band. The club describes itself as a legendary jazz club and theatre where world-famous names have performed.
Today Reduta presents live music every night. Many evenings have two shows, the first at 19:00 and the second at 21:15, which makes it easy to fit a concert around dinner. The programme leans towards swing, standards and tribute evenings, with nights dedicated to the music of Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, Tony Bennett or the jazz age, alongside performances by Czech and visiting musicians. The atmosphere is that of a classic, intimate jazz club.
Tickets are sold online through the programme page on the club's website, and it is wise to book for weekend evenings and popular shows, as the room is not large. Arrive a little before the start to choose a table. Gift vouchers are available if you want to give a night out. Check the programme for the style of each show, as the mix changes nightly.
Reduta suits couples, music lovers and anyone who wants a relaxed, old-school evening of jazz in the centre of the city. The early show works well for families with older children and for visitors who want an early night, while the later set has a more relaxed, late-evening feel. Check the details of each show in the programme when you book. It is less suited to those looking for experimental or avant-garde jazz, for which Jazz Dock or other venues may be a better fit.
The club is at Národní 20, on the same street as Café Louvre and a few minutes from the National Theatre. Národní třída metro station on line B is right by the door, and trams stop along Národní třída. Hemingway Bar is around the corner for a drink before or after the show.
