Why we recommend it

Quince was founded in 2003 by chef Michael Tusk and Lindsay Tusk, and it is now one of San Francisco's top fine dining restaurants, holding three Michelin stars and a green Michelin star for sustainability. It is a member of Relais & Châteaux and is in Jackson Square, at 470 Pacific Avenue. A year-long renovation and redesign has given the restaurant a refreshed look.

The cooking is described as Californian contemporary cuisine with Italian influences, and much of the produce comes from Fresh Run Farm in Bolinas, where Michael Tusk and farmer Peter Martinelli plan the plantings each season around the coastal microclimate. In the main dining room the Gastronomy Menu is a tasting menu composed nightly by Tusk, so it changes with what the farm and the coast provide. Expect a long, carefully paced meal.

For a shorter visit, the Bolinas Bar is an intimate, salon-like space serving the four-course California Coast and Valleys menu, along with cocktails and wine. Seats at the bar are first come, first served, but the California Coast and Valleys menu itself needs a reservation. On Friday and Saturday there is also a four-course lunch menu, served between 11.30am and 1pm. Both the lunch and the Bolinas Bar menus make a lighter alternative to the full Gastronomy Menu, and a good way to experience the kitchen if a long evening tasting menu is not for you.

Quince is open from Tuesday to Saturday, with reservations in the main dining room between 5pm and 8pm. Book early if you have a particular evening in mind, and call the restaurant on +1 415-775-8500 with any questions about menus or tables. It is a place for a special occasion, an anniversary or a serious food lover's night out, and it is priced accordingly. Book well in advance, mention any dietary needs when you reserve, and allow three hours or more for the tasting menu. Private dining rooms are available for groups.

The restaurant also hosts events through the year, sells gift cards and runs a Quince at Home shop, so check the website for what is coming up when you book.
