Good to know
MikeBikes offers something unusual in a city better known for traffic than for cycling: guided bicycle tours that show Kuala Lumpur at street level. The company was started in 2018 by Mike Janssen, a Dutchman who was asked by Tourism Malaysia to help introduce Dutch cycling culture to the country, and he has described it as a social return project as much as a business. It hires local guides, buys from local vendors and restaurants, and collects used children's bikes in the Netherlands to refurbish and donate to children at a refugee school in the city.
The company is based in Kampung Baru, the traditional Malay village that survives in the shadow of the Petronas Twin Towers, and it runs several tours. The Best of Kuala Lumpur Classic is the signature ride, a four-hour morning tour that starts at 8am and links some of the city's most interesting corners. Previous descriptions of the route include Rumah Biru in Kampung Baru, the Chow Kit market, the Sin Sze Si Ya Temple in Chinatown, the River of Life near Central Market, the Loke mansion, Bukit Nanas and a finish at the Petronas Twin Towers, with a banana leaf brunch along the way.
Shorter and themed options are available too. Kuala Lumpur's Authentic Experience is a two-and-a-half-hour ride starting at 9am, the Riverside Experience Tour lasts three hours from 10am, and two four-hour afternoon tours start at 4pm: the Pitstop Foodie Tour, which focuses on food, and the Sunset and Night Tour, which lets you see the city's lights come on from the saddle. Check the website for current routes, inclusions and departure days before you book.
The tours suit active travellers, couples, friends and families with older children who are confident on a bike. Riding in a guided group makes the city's streets far less intimidating than cycling alone. Morning tours are cooler, so they are the best choice in the heat; bring sunscreen, water and light clothing, and wear closed shoes. The company has received TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice recognition in 2025 and 2026.
