Museo del Pisco
The flagship of a small group of pisco bars, near the Plaza de Armas, offering guided tastings of Peru's grape brandy, pisco sour sessions and inventive…
A popular late-night club in an old house on the Plaza de Armas, playing salsa, reggae, hip hop and dance music until the early hours.
Good to know
Mama Africa is one of Cusco's most popular nightclubs, and for many travellers it is where a night out on the Plaza de Armas ends. It is in an old house at Portal de Panes 109, on the third floor above the arcades on the main square, and it has been described as the most popular nightclub in the city.
The music moves between salsa, reggae, hip hop, techno and chart hits and other Latin and dance rhythms, so expect a mixed playlist rather than a single scene. The walls are decorated with African art, which gives the club its name and look, and the bar is known for colourful cocktails. The crowd is a mix of young locals and visitors, which keeps the dance floor busy and the atmosphere friendly. Guides have consistently described the club as having a lively local vibe, and it has featured in nightlife round-ups of the city for years.
Mama Africa has been reported as open every day from 19:00 until 05:00, so it fills up late; there is little point arriving before the bars have started to empty. Many people warm up at nearby bars before heading up, and Mushrooms, a second-floor lounge in the same building, has been described as a popular place for a first drink before heading upstairs.
The club suits backpackers, groups of friends and anyone who wants to dance until the early hours. The mix of music means there is usually something for everyone. If you want to brush up your moves first, other venues around the square, such as Mythology and Inka Team, have offered salsa classes earlier in the evening before turning into clubs.
As with any busy club, keep an eye on your drinks and belongings. The club's setting is part of the city's history: the Portal de Panes, the arcade below, was built on the site of the Inca palace of Qasana.
The Plaza de Armas has plenty of other places to start or end the night, including Paddy's Irish Pub on Calle Triunfo and the live music bars on Calle Plateros, such as Ukukus and República del Pisco.
