Why we recommend it

Liz Cocktails & Co is a small cocktail bar on Rua Dias Ferreira in Leblon, and one of the most acclaimed bars in Rio. In November 2024 Time Out reported that it was the only bar in the city on the Top 500 Bars list, and that it had also been shortlisted for 50 Best Discovery. In 2026 it won the award for the best cocktail list in Veja Rio's Comer e Beber guide.

The focus is on timeless classic cocktails. The menu described by Time Out took drinkers on a musical journey through classics from the 1900s onwards, pairing each song with an original creation and a reinterpretation of a classic. The bar team is led by head mixologist Tai Barbin.

The space is small but used to the full, with a look that Time Out says recalls the aura of Hemingway in Paris. Upstairs there is a cosy second floor that can be booked for events, and on the first floor a reserved room suited to a date. Books are on hand for browsing.

Liz has plenty of playful touches. Bills arrive with postcards, and a postbox in the bar lets guests send mail anywhere in the world. Anyone who works their way through the whole menu receives a decorative gold record, and the bar sells its own merchandise, including shirts, caps and bottled cocktails such as a Negroni. Sundays are special, with live jazz from 17:00 and fresh oysters served with five different peppers, each paired with a particular spirit. Time Out also reported a two-month agave programme with special Tuesday nights.

Time Out's 2024 listing gave opening hours of 18:00 to 01:00 from Tuesday to Saturday and 17:00 to midnight on Sunday, but hours may have changed, so check before you go.

Liz suits couples, cocktail enthusiasts and small groups who want a refined drink rather than a loud night out. Because the bar is small, arrive early or book one of the private rooms for a special occasion.

Rua Dias Ferreira is also home to a branch of Ferro e Farinha, so it is easy to combine dinner and drinks. Oro, Felipe Bronze's two-Michelin-star restaurant, is also in Leblon, and the Janeiro Hotel on Avenida Delfim Moreira is a stylish place to stay within the same neighbourhood.
