Why we recommend it

KL Hop-On Hop-Off is the city's open-top double-decker sightseeing bus, and it is one of the easiest ways for first-time visitors to get their bearings and reach the main sights without worrying about trains or traffic. Buses depart daily, and tickets are valid for 24 or 48 hours from the moment you board, so you can hop off at any stop, explore, and catch a later bus.

The service runs two routes, introduced in their current form in August 2023: the City Route and the Garden Route, each with around 14 stops. You can switch between the two at Sungei Wang Plaza in Bukit Bintang, which is stop number one and has a ticket kiosk. Between them, the routes cover most of the places visitors want to see: KLCC for the Petronas Twin Towers and Aquaria KLCC, KL Tower, Bukit Bintang, Chinatown and Central Market, Merdeka Square, Masjid India and Kampung Baru, Chow Kit, and the Istana Budaya cultural district with the National Visual Arts Gallery and the National Library. The routes also reach the green Lake Gardens area for the KL Bird Park, the National Mosque and the National Museum, as well as the gates of Istana Negara, the national palace, and KL Sentral.

Day services run from 9am to 6pm, with buses roughly every 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic, and at some stops the bus pauses briefly for photographs. There is also a separate night tour, which departs at 8pm. Tickets can be bought on the bus, online through the official website, from agents displaying the HoHo logo or at the Sungei Wang Plaza kiosk. Children's fares are available, and family tickets are offered.

The bus suits families with children, older travellers, short-stay visitors and anyone who wants an overview before deciding where to spend more time. On a hot day the open top deck gives a breeze and the best views, but bring a hat, sunscreen and water, and move downstairs if it rains. To get the most from a 24-hour ticket, start early and plan two or three longer stops, such as KLCC, Chinatown and the Lake Gardens.

Check the official website for the current route maps, stop list and timetable before you go, as routes and stops have changed over the years.
