Why we recommend it

Jonas Reindl brought the third-wave coffee scene into the heart of Vienna, a city better known for its traditional coffee houses. The name is a local joke: the Jonas-Reindl, or Jonas pan, is the nickname for the sunken tram and underground interchange at Schottentor, right outside the original café on Währinger Straße. The company has since grown into a roaster with several cafés around the city.

All of the coffee is roasted at the company's roastery on Westbahnstraße in the seventh district, in small batches of up to ten kilograms, which the roaster says gives better control over flavour and consistency. Beans are sourced directly where possible, with traceability back to the farm, and the range changes with the harvests. The espresso blends and single-origin filter coffees have included beans from Nicaragua, Brazil, Colombia, Kenya and Ethiopia, and there is a decaf for the evening. Expect espresso drinks made with care, filter coffee brewed to order and staff who are happy to talk about what is in the grinder.

The café at Schottentor is compact and modern, a clear contrast to the plush rooms of the grand cafés. It is a good place for a quick, high-quality coffee on the way to the university or the Ring, and many regulars come in for a takeaway cup. Bags of beans make a good souvenir for coffee lovers, and the roastery café on Westbahnstraße is worth a detour if you are exploring the shops of Neubau.

It suits coffee enthusiasts, students and travellers who want a modern alternative to the traditional Melange. The Währinger Straße café opens Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:30 and at weekends from 09:00 to 17:00. Other branches are on Westbahnstraße, Josefstädter Straße and Landstraßer Hauptstraße, with similar daytime hours. As in most speciality coffee bars, the focus is on drinks, so do not plan a full meal here.

The Schottentor café is directly above the U2 station of the same name, where many trams also stop. From here it is a short walk to the University of Vienna, the Votivkirche, Café Landtmann and the Freyung, and a few minutes further to the Hofburg and the old town.
