Café
The Glenwood Bakery
The Glenwood Bakery bakes hand-formed, slow-fermented sourdough and pastries in a hearth oven, with a cafe and deli serving breakfast, sandwiches and lunch dishes.
Humble is a Durban specialty coffee roastery, cafe and bakery founded by former barista Amy Gardiner, roasting beans on site and serving vegetarian brunch and lunch.
Good to know
Humble began as a small coffee roaster and has grown into a cafe, roastery and bakery with two Durban outlets. It was founded by Amy Gardiner, a former barista from Scotland, who started with roasting and gradually added a cafe, roastery and bakery. Every bean is roasted on site in small four-kilogram batches, which gives the team close control over each roast and means the coffee in your cup was roasted only a short distance away.
The coffee list covers a house espresso blend and a second blend called Love, alongside single origins from countries such as Colombia, Guatemala and Indonesia, and the beans are sold by the bag if you want to take some home. Humble also makes capsules compatible with Nespresso machines. Ask the baristas which single origin is on filter or espresso that day, and try it black first to taste the difference from a darker supermarket roast.
The food is entirely vegetarian, with a brunch and lunch menu built on local, seasonal ingredients and many vegan options. The bakery side produces pastries, cakes such as banana bread and Basque cheesecake, and breakfast pots, which are also sold as catering platters for offices and events. It is a relaxed place for a slow breakfast, a working morning with a laptop or a coffee meeting.
Humble's main cafe is on Churchill Road in Greyville, on the edge of Morningside, and there is a second outlet further up Florida Road at number 262 in Windermere. Opening hours are not listed on the website, so check the cafe's social media pages before you go, especially on public holidays. Weekend mornings are the busiest time.
It suits coffee enthusiasts, vegetarians and vegans, and anyone looking for a calm alternative to the larger chain coffee shops. The Morningside area around it has plenty to do afterwards: Florida Road's galleries and shops are a short drive away, Mitchell Park is in Morningside, and the Durban Botanic Gardens are a short drive away. Specialty coffee lovers can also compare Humble's roasts with the coffee served at the Glenwood Bakery, which buys from roasters in the greater Durban area.
