Hotel
Mandarin Oriental, Taipei
A luxury hotel on Dunhua North Road with a full spa, the Cantonese restaurant Ya Ge and quick access to Songshan Airport.
A budget hostel in a renovated 1970s building opposite the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, with a courtyard, bookshop and cultural events.
Good to know
Flip Flop Hostel is a budget option with a cultural streak, and it was one of three hostels near Taipei Main Station recommended by the official TAIPEI Quarterly magazine in summer 2026. It occupies a lovingly renovated 1970s building on Chang'an West Road in the Datong District, directly opposite the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, about seven minutes' walk from the station's West 1 exit.
The room choice is wider than at many hostels. There are mixed dormitories and a female-only dorm, along with single, double, triple and quadruple private rooms, some of which have en-suite bathrooms. That range makes it practical for solo travellers, couples, friends and even small families travelling on a budget, who can share a private room while still enjoying the social side of hostel life.
The shared spaces are a big part of the appeal. An open-air courtyard gives guests somewhere to sit outside, The One Bookstore adds a literary touch, and a common lounge has a simple kitchen for preparing snacks and light meals. Breakfast is handled through vouchers worth NT$100 that guests can redeem at the Good Morning breakfast place. The hostel also hosts cultural markets, exhibitions and small concerts, which makes it a good fit for travellers interested in architecture and contemporary culture.
Because events are part of the programme, the common areas can be lively at times, so light sleepers may prefer a private room. Check the official website for current room types, rates and check-in arrangements, and book early for weekends and holiday periods, when budget beds near the station are in high demand. Pack flip-flops for the shared bathrooms if you are staying in a dorm, a fitting habit given the hostel's name.
The location makes sightseeing easy. Taipei Main Station, with the MRT, high-speed rail and airport MRT, is a short walk away, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei across the road is an obvious first stop. Dihua Street, Dadaocheng and Wang Tea are a short trip to the north-west, and the National Taiwan Museum, 228 Peace Memorial Park and the Astoria Cafe lie to the south of the station. For a special meal, Le Palais at the Palais de Chine Hotel is close by.
