Why we recommend it

Alaya Resort Ubud is a mid-sized resort on Jalan Hanoman in the heart of Ubud, set in gardens and run on the Balinese philosophy of tri hita karana, the balance between people, nature and the divine. With 106 rooms and suites, it is larger than most of the boutique properties in town, but its central location and resort facilities make it a practical choice for travellers who want to walk to restaurants and sights.

The location is the main selling point. According to the resort, the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is about 800 metres away, the Ubud Art Market and Ubud Palace about 1.9 km, the Campuhan Ridge Walk about 2.6 km and the Blanco Museum about 2.8 km. Ngurah Rai International Airport is about 35 km away.

Rooms range from Deluxe Rooms with a private terrace or balcony to Alaya Rooms with a semi open-air bathroom and the resort's signature stone bathtub, and suites that add a separate living area.

Dining is centred on the Brasserie, a modern bistro that serves breakfast and afternoon tea and hosts live music at weekends. The Bamboo Pool Bar serves juices, cocktails and light refreshments by the pool, and there is in-room dining. Alaya Grounds, a dining and lifestyle space nearby, offers further options. The resort's award-winning DaLa Spa provides massages, traditional body scrubs and herbal drinks, and group yoga classes are held in an open-air bale on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Guests can also join cultural activities such as making canang sari offerings, herbal tea and rice body scrub classes and traditional Balinese paper doll making, and couples can book a candlelit dinner in a private bale.

Alaya also hosts weddings and events in its Joglo Pavilion and in the gardens. Rooms can be booked as room-only stays or through packages that combine accommodation with spa treatments and other extras. Reservations and enquiries can be made by phone or by email.

The resort suits couples, families and first-time visitors to Ubud who want comfortable rooms, a pool and a spa within walking distance of the main street. Jalan Hanoman itself has plenty of cafés and restaurants, including KAFE, Clear Café and Bebek Bengil, so you will not need transport for most meals.
