Why we recommend it

The Tidal Basin is a 107-acre reservoir just south of the National Mall, and walking around it is one of the classic things to do in Washington. Its banks are lined with cherry trees and three major memorials look out over the water: the Jefferson Memorial, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.

Most people come for one of two reasons. In spring the cherry blossoms turn the edges of the basin pink and white, and the National Cherry Blossom Festival makes it the focus of the city's biggest seasonal event. Out of season, the walk is much quieter and is a good way to see the memorials at your own pace, with long views across the water to the Washington Monument.

A loop of the water takes in all three memorials, and each is worth a stop to read the inscriptions. Allow around two hours for the full walk with stops, longer during the blossom season when the paths are crowded. The memorials are free to visit.

Paddle boats can be hired from mid-March to October from a dock near the eastern end of the basin, which is a good way for families to see the memorials from the water. Children usually enjoy it, and it gives tired legs a rest during a long day on the Mall.

There is one important thing to know before you go. The National Park Service is rebuilding about 6,800 feet of the seawall, a project that began in 2024 and was planned to take around three years. Some paths may be closed or diverted while the work goes on, and around 158 cherry trees were removed in 2024 to make way for it. The new walkways will be wider when the work is finished. In blossom season, take public transport rather than driving.

The basin suits everyone, from couples looking for a scenic walk to families and history lovers. Visit early in the morning or around sunset for the best light and fewer people. The Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial are both within walking distance, so it fits easily into a monuments walk.
