Why we recommend it

Wally's Café Jazz Club is one of the oldest names in Boston's music scene. Joseph L. Walcott, who arrived from Barbados at the age of 13 and drove a cab, opened Wally's Paradise on New Year's Day 1947 at 428 Massachusetts Avenue; the club describes it as the first Black-owned nightclub in New England. It moved to number 427 in 1979, and after Walcott's death in 1998, aged 101, his daughter Elynor and his grandsons took it on. The club is now in its fourth generation of family ownership.

What makes Wally's special is the mix of musicians. From Tuesday to Saturday, the jam sessions from 7pm to 9pm bring students from Berklee onto the bandstand to trade choruses with big band veterans, and professional performers take over for the night sets, which run every night until midnight. A typical evening starts with a queue at about 6:45pm, the jam at 7pm, the night set at 10pm and the last note at midnight.

Doors open at 7pm from Tuesday to Saturday and at 9pm on Sunday and Monday. No reservations are needed and there is no velvet rope; the house rules are simple: come as you are, listen closely, tip the band and pass the music forward. As a general tip, arrive early if you want a spot near the bandstand, and bring some cash for tipping the band.

The club suits music lovers, solo travellers and couples looking for an authentic, low-key night out rather than a polished cocktail lounge. It is a good place to hear young players at the start of their careers as well as seasoned professionals, and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. If you are planning a private event, the venue can be hired for up to 50 guests.

Remember that the club's house rules ask guests to listen closely, so keep conversation low during sets. If you enjoy the jam session, staying for the night set gives you a sense of the contrast between students and professionals.

The club is on Massachusetts Avenue in the South End, and it works well after dinner at one of the neighbourhood's restaurants. Keep an eye on the club's calendar for special events, and plan transport home in advance, since the night sets finish at midnight.
