Weekend boat trips to a working chinampa in Xochimilco with a regenerative farming network, including sunrise visits, brunches and farm meals on the canals.
Good to know
Arca Tierra is a local network that has worked on sustainable and small-scale farming since 2009, promoting good food through regenerative agriculture and fair trade. Alongside selling seasonal produce, it runs rural and food experiences in Xochimilco that take visitors to a working chinampa, one of the artificial farming plots between the canals. It is a very different way to see Xochimilco from a party boat ride.
Every experience starts with a guided trajinera ride through the canals, around 40 minutes each way, followed by a walk around the chinampa to learn about regenerative farming and the traditional knowledge that keeps it productive. Allow at least three hours from boarding the boat to returning to the landing. Guests meet near the public embarcadero of Cuemanco, and a confirmation email gives detailed arrival instructions.
Public experiences run at weekends and on long weekends. The Amanecer chinampero sets off at sunrise, between about 5:30 and 6:30 depending on the season, and there is a Sunday brunch, a family chinampa day, sunrise sessions with a guest cook from The Curious Mexican, a taco day around a living ofrenda, a medicinal and aromatic plants session and a dinner among the chinampas. In the Day of the Dead season there is a themed experience too. Private experiences for groups of up to ten, including cooking workshops and seasonal menus prepared with the Contreras family, can be booked on weekdays with at least 48 hours' notice.
Some practical points. Public experiences are in Spanish, with bilingual guides available on request. Every booking must be made in advance through the online calendar or, for private groups, by contacting the team by WhatsApp. All sales are final, with no refunds, although tickets can be transferred. Children under three go free, vegetarian options are always offered at the sunrise and brunch experiences, and other dietary needs should be noted when booking. Tips are not included, and parking near the landing is run separately.
Arca Tierra suits families, nature lovers, photographers who want early light on the canals and anyone interested in sustainable food. Dress in layers for the early sunrise trips, which can be cool on the water, and bring cash for parking and tips. It pairs well with an afternoon at the Museo Anahuacalli or Museo Frida Kahlo in the south of the city.
